The franchise’s creator cited the Rockstar and Take-Two game as the reason for the delay, but from a different perspective.

The November 19 release of Grand Theft Auto VI on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series is set to be one of the biggest launches of all time. Other game publishers have scheduled their releases as far away from this date as possible, making September and October the busiest months in recent memory. However, not every game’s release date has been rescheduled for economic reasons related to Rockstar Games’ highly anticipated open-world title. Kazutaka Kodaka, the creator of the Danganronpa series, postponed the release of Danganronpa 2×2 because he otherwise would not have had enough time to play Grand Theft Auto VI.

“Of course, we wanted more development time. Very natural, right? But separately, a certain AAA/AAAA title is going to be released soon, so we wanted to avoid that. I would not have had time to work on the game while playing Grand Theft Auto VI, so it was inevitable that we would have to postpone the release,” the series creator told Crunchyroll.

Although Kodaka’s statement is humorous, it immediately highlights something important. Game developers are gamers too, something that is easy to forget when focusing exclusively on the development or business side of the industry. It would not be surprising if other developers also breathed a sigh of relief when their publishers delayed the release of their games, giving them more development time and potentially more time to play a title expected to shake up the entire industry.

In addition to making September and October incredibly busy months for game releases, the November 19 release date of Grand Theft Auto VI has also turned February and March 2027 into months packed with new games. With highly anticipated titles such as Stranger Than Heaven, Fable, Persona 4 Revival, and God of War: Laufey being released one after another over the course of just a few weeks, many gamers will have to make difficult decisions about how to allocate their time and money.
