MOVIE NEWS – Steven Spielberg described the digital-world spectacle Ready Player One as the most difficult movie he had made since Saving Private Ryan. Although updates about the 2018 science-fiction adventure’s sequel disappeared for years, the original movie’s screenwriter has confirmed that work on the project is continuing.

Steven Spielberg has directed dramatic human stories, family adventures, and movies created for distinctly adult audiences throughout his career. After The BFG, however, the filmmaker placed a love of video games and popular culture at the center of his next large-scale production when he released Ready Player One in 2018.

Industrial Light & Magic worked extensively to create elaborate digital worlds and high-end visual effects, while the production had to make the most of a $175 million budget that appears relatively restrained beside many modern blockbusters. The movie became a theatrical success, although its financial performance did not translate into equally enthusiastic critical acclaim. Eight years after its release, the sequel nevertheless remains in development despite widespread assumptions that it had quietly died.

Spielberg’s production company, Amblin Entertainment, brought Ernest Cline’s novel to the screen in 2018, but the adaptation made several significant changes to the source material. The original book drew heavily from movies and video games of the 1970s and 1980s, while Spielberg’s version adopted a broader approach intended to reach a more general audience by combining popular culture from several generations.

Toho’s Mechagodzilla and Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining appeared alongside properties such as Halo, Overwatch, and Street Fighter. The filmmakers wanted to create a large-scale adventure that celebrated players and pop-culture fans of every age. Bringing that enormous collection of references together also created complicated legal, technical, and creative challenges.

The reception ultimately proved somewhat weaker than anticipated. Ready Player One earned a 71% score on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed a little more than $500 million worldwide, making it a financial success. Spielberg nevertheless called it the most difficult movie he had made since Saving Private Ryan, and the restrained critical response left the sequel’s future uncertain. Audiences knew that some form of Ready Player Two screenplay existed, but for a long time, it appeared unlikely to progress beyond an early draft.

Ready Player Two Is Still Moving Forward Without Spielberg Directing

Zak Penn, who wrote the first movie’s screenplay with Ernest Cline, provided a brief but direct answer when The Direct recently asked about the sequel’s status. “I’m working on it,” he said. The statement offers very few details, but it confirms that the project has not been canceled and may still eventually reach production.

The update is especially significant because no substantial information about the sequel had emerged for two years. Cline revealed in 2020 that he and Penn were already developing early screenplay drafts based on the novel Ready Player Two. The author began writing that book while the first adaptation was being filmed and published it in 2020, although he has always insisted that creating another movie was not his only motivation.

Spielberg did not publicly confirm that the project remained in development until 2024. Very little is currently known about the movie’s story beyond the expectation that it will draw from the second novel. Among the original cast members, only Olivia Cooke has publicly discussed the possibility of returning and revealed that her contract included an option for another installment.

The rest of the cast, including original lead Tye Sheridan, has never publicly addressed a potential sequel. Sheridan received the role of Wade Watts during one of the busiest periods of his career, after portraying the younger Scott Summers, also known as Cyclops, in the X-Men movies. The actor has remained away from the big screen since 2024, leaving his possible return to the virtual world of the OASIS uncertain.

One major change already appears likely: Steven Spielberg would not return as director. The filmmaker is expected to remain involved as a producer, but no replacement director has been announced. Ready Player Two may therefore still be in an uncertain and early stage of development, but Penn’s comments confirm that the sequel has not disappeared into a Hollywood vault eight years after the original movie.
