MOVIE NEWS – Kit Harington returns to period drama as Sydney Carton in the BBC’s four-part adaptation of A Tale of Two Cities. This version of Charles Dickens’ novel centers its revolutionary turmoil on a love triangle and on the choices that will determine the lives of its three principal characters.

Following Industry and alongside Hulu’s Count My Lies, Harington is stepping back into a historical setting. Sydney Carton is a gifted but self-destructive lawyer whose direction changes when he encounters Lucie Manette and Charles Darnay, a man who bears an uncanny resemblance to him.

Mirren Mack plays Lucie, who discovers that the father she believed dead is actually alive in Paris. François Civil portrays Darnay, accused of treason as the physical similarity between him and Carton grows increasingly important to the unfolding story.

A love triangle set against a world breaking apart

The producers say the four-episode drama retains Dickens’ political tension while bringing the personal relationships closer to the foreground. “It is a modern love triangle unfolding while the world around them is literally coming apart,” they said of the adaptation’s central conflict.

Daniel West, creator of Gunpowder, wrote the series. Its compact length promises a leaner pace than many earlier adaptations while preserving the London and Paris storylines, the social upheaval and the emotional stakes that bind the characters together.

MGM+ will premiere the drama in the United States on September 6, while the BBC has yet to announce its exact domestic date. For Harington, Carton offers another opportunity to play a tragic and morally complicated figure inside an expansive historical production.
