The Team Working on CD Projekt RED’s Multiplayer Witcher Game Has Been Reduced by 18 People!

And yet, one of the games announced by CD Projekt RED (CDPR), which is still in development, is reportedly on track.

While the unofficial The Witcher 3 Online mod kept the dream of a multiplayer Witcher game alive, most fans are still waiting for CDPR to finish the long-awaited Project Sirius. This is the codename given by CDPR to an experimental multiplayer game set in the Witcher universe, which is being developed by The Molasses Flood — a Boston-based studio that was acquired by CD Projekt in October 2021. The project was announced a year later, alongside several other Witcher and Cyberpunk projects. Project Sirius has certainly had its fair share of setbacks: in March 2023, CD Projekt announced that it had reassessed the scope and commercial potential of the original concept, recorded an impairment charge on prior development expenses, and begun developing a new framework for the project.

Following this announcement, 29 employees left the project (21 in the United States and eight in Poland). A few months later, CDPR confirmed that it had implemented a new framework and salvaged some of the previous work. In 2024, CD Projekt announced its intention to fully integrate The Molasses Flood into CDPR Inc., aiming to enhance alignment between the studio and the wider organisation. However, CD Projekt acknowledged that this transition would inevitably result in changes to the project’s leadership. The company emphasised that the Sirius project itself would continue. By the end of July 2025, CD Projekt reported that 51 developers were working on Project Sirius. By the end of 2025, this figure had reportedly risen to around 56. However, these figures referred to internal development staff only and did not necessarily reflect the project’s total headcount. In early 2025, the departing director hinted that Sirius would be an excellent addition to the multiplayer titles in The Witcher series.

According to Kotaku, nine employees working on Project Sirius lost their jobs in a round of layoffs, while another nine were reassigned to a different project within CDPR. According to the report, however, development has been progressing relatively well recently following changes implemented earlier this year. As expected, CDPR is currently primarily focused on The Witcher IV and the upcoming DLC for The Witcher 3, Songs of the Past. However, the successful launch of a live service game would undoubtedly provide a significant boost to the studio’s recurring revenue. Unfortunately, it is difficult to make any predictions about when the game might be unveiled, as we still don’t know what stage it is at.

CD Projekt released the following brief statement: “We adjusted the size of the Sirius team to reflect the project’s needs at this stage of development.” Before the layoffs, the team consisted of 83 people, but this figure has now been reduced to 65.
