MOVIE NEWS – Kit Harington will play Gilderoy Lockhart in HBO’s Harry Potter series after Nicholas Hoult left the role because of scheduling conflicts. The Game of Thrones star may look like an unexpected choice at first, but a previous connection to the character makes the casting far more logical than it seems.

HBO needed to find a replacement quickly for Hogwarts’ flamboyant and spectacularly incompetent Defence Against the Dark Arts professor. Production is already under way on the second season, which adapts J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, so Hoult’s departure could have become a major scheduling problem.

Harington is still closely associated with Jon Snow and restrained heroic roles, while Gilderoy Lockhart demands a very different performance. Lockhart arrives at Hogwarts as a charming celebrity whose bestselling adventures conceal far less genuine achievement than he wants his admirers to believe.

Harington has already performed Lockhart once

The casting is not entirely out of left field. Harington voiced Lockhart in the official audiobook released in late 2025, which means he has already explored the character’s comic timing, vanity and carefully manufactured confidence.

That experience could be especially useful in a television adaptation designed to give the novels more room than the films could. Lockhart is one of the second story’s most important comic figures, but the actor must also sell the cowardice and manipulation lurking beneath his polished public image.

HBO’s first season, based on Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, is currently scheduled to premiere on December 25, 2026. The second season does not yet have an official release date, although the ongoing production suggests HBO does not intend to leave an unusually long gap between the two chapters.
