A file accidentally included with NBA 2K27 has leaked DLSS 5 neural rendering ahead of schedule, and modders got it running in multiple games within hours. The spectacular results come with a massive performance penalty and a sharply divided response from the community.
NVIDIA is still weeks away from officially launching DLSS 5, but an early-access build of NBA 2K27 shipped with a 158 MB file named nvngx_dlssnr.dll. The library is almost twice the size of the current DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction DLL and may contain a full generative model that runs locally on the graphics card.
Members of the RenoDX Discord community quickly extracted the library and first got it working in Control. The unofficial compatibility list soon expanded to include Skyrim, GTA: San Andreas, Cyberpunk 2077, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
The technology uses color and motion vectors from an already rendered image before applying AI-generated lighting and material detail. Skin, hair, and faces can appear more detailed, although the process does not replace the original 3D content.
The current performance cost is enormous. In Control, an RTX 5070 Ti running at 4K with high ray tracing dropped from 75 to 31 fps, while a modified RTX 4090 fell from 130 to 83 fps. One RTX 5060 user reported a plunge from 86 to just 32 fps.
Some players praise the improved lighting and character detail, while others believe the result looks excessively artificial. NVIDIA insists that DLSS 5 is not merely a filter and says developers retain full artistic control over the intensity and placement of the effect.
The finished version of DLSS 5 is scheduled to launch for RTX 5000 cards this fall. Starfield, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and Resident Evil Requiem are among the first confirmed games, but the leaked build suggests that substantial optimization work remains.
