Onimusha: Way of the Sword’s 85 Metacritic average is further proof that Capcom has delivered an almost flawless run in 2026. The publisher is now closer than ever to the Publisher of the Year crown, an award even GTA VI cannot take away from it.

Reviews for Onimusha: Way of the Sword, due on September 4, are already in, and the critical verdict is remarkably consistent. After more than 80 reviews, the PlayStation 5 version holds an 85 Metacritic average, placing it 33rd in the site’s annual ranking alongside several other games.

The notable coincidence is that Pragmata, another new Capcom release, sits in the same group with an 85 score. Capcom has now released four new games in 2026 that scored at least 85: Resident Evil Requiem earned 89, while Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection reached 86.

Capcom is the leading Publisher of the Year candidate

Metacritic’s annual Publisher of the Year award recognizes the company whose games achieve the strongest overall results. Capcom’s position is also helped by the Nintendo Switch releases of Devil May Cry 5, Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil Village.

The run is particularly striking because Capcom was going through one of the most difficult periods in its history barely a decade ago. Today, the company is posting record financial results while both critics and players continue to respond positively to its new releases.

The streak may not be over yet: the long-awaited Dragon’s Dogma 2 expansion is approaching, while a new version of Resident Evil Code: Veronica is reportedly planned for 2027. If the next releases maintain this quality, Capcom’s 2026 publishing crown will hardly come as a surprise.
