It May Lack FPS, but It Puts Hundreds of Soldiers on Screen: This For Honor Spiritual Successor Is Bringing Massive Battles to PS5 and PC

Developed by Athena Games, CONQ: Crown of No Quarter is scheduled for release in 2027. The dark fantasy action game is coming to PS5 and PC, promising huge battles with hundreds of soldiers as it attempts to build on some of the ideas behind For Honor.

Yesterday’s State of Play was a strange showcase, to say the least. Not only did it take place in the wake of one of the most controversial decisions in video game history, but despite apparently being intended to close out the summer event season, it carried surprisingly little weight and largely ignored the most significant projects on PlayStation’s upcoming calendar. A few games nevertheless managed to stand out, including CONQ: Crown of No Quarter, a dark fantasy tactical action game that looks as though someone took the basic concept of For Honor and decided to mix it with the musou-style mass battles of Dynasty Warriors.

A Mix of For Honor, Dynasty Warriors and Chivalry

Developed by British studio Athena Games, CONQ takes players to the so-called Eternal Shift, specifically a purgatory known as the Iron Cycle. The premise is somewhat reminiscent of Valhalla, except there is no celebration or rest waiting for the warriors here: soldiers from different eras and civilizations are condemned to fight in what appears to be an endless war. Athena Games uses that setting to bring Vikings, Spartans, medieval European soldiers and other armies together, creating battles between forces that under normal historical circumstances could never have encountered each other on the same battlefield.

Whereas For Honor built much of its combat around the direction of attacks and blocks, CONQ is taking a considerably more arcade-oriented approach, moving closer to the territory of musou games while combining melee fighting with martial arts elements. Players will fight directly on the front line as the largest and strongest soldier in their faction, while also being able to command their subordinate units in real time.

The developers also appear to be drawing inspiration from Warhaven, with several different game modes planned instead of limiting the experience to traditional sieges or control-point battles. Players will be able to fight at sea, take control of ships, fire their cannons and board enemy vessels, while sieges will feature weapons capable of tearing down opposing defenses. There will also be more conventional open-field battles featuring, according to the studio, “hundreds of NPCs” at the same time. On top of that come supernatural elements known as Anomalies, which can change the course of battle through dark mutations, summon legions of the undead, unleash shadow curses and even weaken the morale of enemy armies.

CONQ: Crown of No Quarter is therefore shaping up to be an unusually ambitious project that attempts to combine some of the most recognizable elements of several different games within the same enormous battlefield. Athena Games plans to release it for PS5 and PC in 2027, although a more precise launch date has yet to be announced.
