The Japanese description suggests that Nintendo is slowly beginning to leave its previous-generation hardware behind.

On September 8 at 4:00 p.m. Hungarian time, Nintendo will host a Direct livestream titled The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary. The stream will be available on YouTube and Nintendo.com. The presentation will last approximately half an hour. Nintendo recently announced a remake of the Nintendo 64 classic, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, for the Switch 2, which is set to release in 2026. The company will likely provide more details about the remake during the livestream. After Tears of the Kingdom, will the Big N announce the next installment during the livestream? You never know.

As we said, however, the Big N will be doubling down next week. The company has announced that its next Nintendo Direct will be held on September 9 at 4:00 p.m. Hungarian time. You can watch this broadcast on YouTube and on the Nintendo.com website. The presentation will last approximately 45 minutes. Immediately following the broadcast will be a Nintendo Treehouse: Live stream, during which we’ll see gameplay footage from select titles featured in the Nintendo Direct.

This is where what we mentioned earlier comes into play. Nintendo’s Japanese website states that only Nintendo Switch 2 titles will be featured in the Nintendo Direct. The Japanese company has already transitioned to the next generation with its first-party titles, meaning this transitional period lasted just one year. Since the Switch debuted in March 2017, the hardware is nearly ten years old. It’s as if Sony and Microsoft had also switched to developing exclusively for current-gen platforms around 2023.

Consequently, the first-generation Switch will now only be supported by third-party titles and ports. The question, of course, is how long that will be.
