Did Apple Back Out of a Written Agreement to Replace a MacBook Pro?

TECH NEWS – A complicated situation arose regarding the exchange, even though the Cupertino-based company had agreed to it in writing.

Apple has proven time and again that it sets the gold standard for customer service. However, the owner of an M4 Pro MacBook Pro experienced the exact opposite. After repeatedly trying to resolve the issue, he lost his patience and publicly posted evidence for the whole internet to see. The evidence showed that the tech giant had issued him a written agreement clearly stating that it would replace the defective hardware, but then went back on its word.

According to Reddit user Evening_Dish_6762 (Abdallah), even though his device is only one generation older, his 14-inch M4 Pro MacBook Pro has already been repaired twice. During these repairs, the logic board, display, and lid’s tilt sensor were replaced. After the laptop failed to perform as expected (e.g., it was slow when running games), a senior advisor from Apple Support emailed Abdallah, stating that the M4 Pro MacBook Pro would be replaced. The new device will be shipped in September, when machines with the same specifications will be back in stock. Unfortunately, when the time came to receive the replacement, a series of emails failed to yield a substantive response. With no other options left, Abdallah emailed Apple’s former CEO, Tim Cook, asking him to escalate the issue.

The company breached the contract with the customer and must honor its promise to replace the device. However, according to another user, TheRyznhawk, Apple generally does not replace MacBooks, and the only products covered by this policy are iPhones, iPads, and other accessories. Since MacBooks can be assembled from scratch using various components, replacements are rarely necessary. Despite six repair attempts, TheRyznhawk does not consider prioritizing the M4 Pro MacBook Pro justified. If that were the case, why haven’t Apple support staff been able to get the machine working after six repair attempts? Perhaps there is an isolated hardware issue that they haven’t identified yet.

Although TheRyznhawk’s comment may be discouraging for Abdallah, others have encouraged him to continue reaching out to Apple until a solution is found. At the same time, one customer received an M5 Max MacBook Pro instead of an M2 Max configuration, along with store credit, because he lost patience. Another customer with a 2019 Intel-based portable Mac received an M5 MacBook Pro at no extra cost. There have been numerous instances where it has paid off to be an Apple customer. However, it’s disappointing that the M4 Pro MacBook Pro isn’t receiving the same consumer-friendly treatment.
