MOVIE NEWS – Brad Pitt is rarely pushed into the background on the big screen, but David Ayer’s survival film Heart of the Beast established its hierarchy right on the call sheet. Odin the dog was listed first, leaving Pitt happy to joke that he had become the supporting actor to his four-legged co-star.

David Ayer, director of Fury, Suicide Squad and The Beekeeper, has built the story around Pitt’s James Belmont, a former Special Forces soldier who heads to Alaska with Odin, his retired combat dog. What is supposed to be a quiet trip rapidly turns into a fight for survival when their small plane crashes into freezing water. From there, the pair must endure wolves, brutal weather and the unforgiving wilderness, while James is also forced to confront memories of the missions that continue to haunt him.

That makes the journey psychological as well as physical. James hopes that withdrawing into nature will finally help him quiet the darker parts of his past, with Odin serving as his one remaining loyal companion. The dog is played by Uber, making his film debut, and working with him created an unfamiliar challenge even for an actor as experienced as Pitt. For roughly 95 percent of the movie, Pitt is effectively the only human performer on screen, which means much of the story depends on the relationship between man and dog.

Uber, naturally, did not always share his co-star’s sense of dramatic timing. Pitt could be deep into an emotionally intense scene only for the dog to wander away because something in the nearby vegetation smelled considerably more interesting. Pitt would then have to pull out a treat, bring his scene partner back into position and quickly rebuild the emotional state he had just been forced to abandon.

Ayer told Entertainment Weekly that Pitt effectively served as both actor and dog trainer throughout production. The contrast could become particularly funny when Pitt was required to perform a serious dramatic scene with complete commitment while Uber was far more interested in trying to catch a passing bee. Under those circumstances, Pitt’s joke about becoming the supporting player in his own movie was not entirely without justification.
