Gran Turismo was Polys Entertainment‘s brave try in 1997. While the team renamed itself Polyphony Digital before the international release, the game became a huge success in Japan, as Gran Turismo gave a sense of freedom and the chance to tune some great cars, making it a must-have for many PlayStation-owners.
Since then, almost 20 years passed and the franchise has twelve installments. It includes all versions of the Concept games and the Prologue versions as well. Despite that, Gran Turismo has some good sales numbers: it has 76.49 million copies sold total. Gran Turismo 6‘s result might be a tad disappointing as 2013’s PS3 game only managed to get 4.7 million in two years. (It might be because of the launch of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One just days before the game released.)
Polyphony is looking forward already because they are working on Gran Turismo Sport. This game was announced at Paris Game Week, and it’s going to receive a beta in 2016 on the PS4. Still, good job, Polyphony – it’s somewhat disappointing that the PlayStation Vita didn’t get a Gran Turismo installment while the PSP got one, although it wasn’t the full experience.
