Microsoft has revealed more information about the stronger Xbox One.
Digital Foundry had the chance to see what the Project Scorpio can do. If we had to describe the console shortly, we would say that it has an 8-core, tuned Jaguar CPU at 2.3 GHz (31% faster than the Xbox One), a 4K UHD Blu-ray drive, twelve (!) gigabytes of GDDR5 RAM with no ESRAM (the original Xbox One has that) with a 326 GB/s bandwidth on twelve 32-bit channels; the GPU has 40 Radeon computing units at 1172 MHz, and the hard drive is 1 TB with a 50% increase in bandwidth. Audio? Dolby Atmos support!
They saw Forza in action, and it ran at sixty frames per second on 4K resolution. Microsoft promises to run all 900p and 1080p games better than a normal Xbox One as well. It could be because of the Scorpio Engine SoC, which is capable of Direct3D 12. This name is familiar: the PS2 had something called the Emotion Engine. The GPU’s speed is slightly behind AMD’s Polaris-based RX 480, whose 36 units has 1266 MHz maxed out, but that needs a beefy cooling system. Microsoft kept their 6 TFLOPS computing performance promise as well. HDMI 2.0, vapour chamber cooling system, similar to GeForce GTX 1080s’ method on PCs, and the 245 W PSU is built into the console’s box as well. The Kinect port is also dropped – you’ll have to use a 40-dollar USB converter if you plan to use one (although why would you use the Kinect?).
All 900p and full HD games will be likely capable of run on 4K on Project Scorpio, which would give better frame rate/load times for X1/X360 games. Because of this move, we’ll have to wait and see what Microsoft will ask for the console – in other words; the price is the question. On paper, Redmond has an advantage over Japan, but Microsoft will have to show something software-wise as well. As all games will be available on PC, the Project Scorpio is in a tough situation. Eurogamer believes that the console would cost 499 dollars, which would be at least a hundred above the PS4 Pro, which could see a price cut in response to Microsoft’s reveal to 350 bucks. Then, the situation would be in another twist…
