SEGA made the right choice by speeding up the localization.
Toshihiro Nagoshi, SEGA‘s chief creative officer, announced in a Japanese video a few new details about Yakuza’s success. He said that Yakuza 6: The Song of Life is nearing a million sales (it’s between 800 and 900 thousand at the moment), which explains why SEGA praises this game’s performance in the West. He added that while the franchise was mostly successful in Japan, it now sells in the West just as well as on local soil.
Nagoshi confirmed that the recently announced Yakuza 3-4-5 re-releases would not include previously cut content, so you don’t have to get the PlayStation 3-to-PlayStation 4 Kiwami titles because of this aspect. The possible drop in sales because of this will likely be compensated by the new fans of the franchise who will probably acquire these three games as well.
Yakuza got a new life outside Japan and seeing how it’s mostly a Sony-exclusive franchise (games like 1 & 2’s HD version got a Wii U release as well…), we should appreciate its success.
