How’re The PlayStation 4’s Shipments Faring?

Sony released their newest quarterly fiscal report, which includes several PlayStation-related numbers.

In the July-September quarter, Sony shipped 3.9 million PlayStation 4s to the stores, which is a 0.3 million decrease year-on-year (which makes sense due to the PS4’s age, and thus, the reach it has already). With this number, the PlayStation 4 has jumped to 86.1 million units, and it might be around 88 million by its fifth birthday if Sony will announce it in November. (And why wouldn’t they? There will be no PlayStation Experience this year…)

In the previous three months, 75.1 million games were sold. It is a 5.4 million increase year-on-year. The digital sales have slightly increased as well from a year ago – the PlayStation Store sales took 28% instead of 27.

Unlike Nintendo, Sony has modified its forecasts – in the current fiscal year that runs from April until the end of next March; they initially predicted to ship 17 million PlayStation 4s. It’s now 17.5 million due to the impact of foreign exchange rates, as well as an increase in game software sales and PlayStation Plus subscribers. There were over 34.3 million PlayStation Plus subscribers by the end of September 30, which is a 6.3 million increase from a year ago.

If Sony cuts the console’s price again, the PlayStation 4 will be easily capable of breaking the 100 million barrier – while that’d be still behind the PlayStation 2, it’d still be a very respectable result.
