Although it’s not announced yet, it seems Sony is planning to make us buy games directly from the PlayStation Store…

It first surfaced on Twitter that GameStop, an American retailer chain, got a memo from Sony, saying that from April 1, NO retailers will get PlayStation Store game codes. From that day, you will have to buy them directly from the PlayStation Store. However, DLC, as well as PlayStation Store cards (basically gift cards whose value you can spend on the PlayStation Store) will still be available from the retailers.

Currently, we don’t know if this change will involve digital retailers, such as Amazon, as well. The answer is possibly yes to this question. With this move, Sony effectively wants to cut the middle man out of the equation to offer direct sales to us, the customers, on the PlayStation Store. (And possibly try to make us subscribe to PlayStation Plus as well in the process…)

There’s no announcement yet, but if Sony has already sent the memo to GameStop (and the Twitter source in this game is reliable!), we should prepare.

GameStop stores just got a memo saying that Sony will no longer provide full game digital download codes to retailers (not just GameStop) starting April 1st. Digital games will only be available straight from PSN after that date. Add-on content/PSN $ cards will still be available
