There’s another rumour about the next-generation PlayStation 5, which still doesn’t have an official name yet.
On Twitter, Komachi has leaked clock speeds of the Oberon, which should be closely related to the Ariel and Gonzalo – regarding the latter, we have heard that it’s in the PlayStation 5’s devkit, but there’s also a chance that it might the APU (advanced processing unit – a CPU and a GPU on a single die) in the console that is likely going to launch in late 2020, close to the next-gen Xbox, codenamed Xbox Project Scarlett for now.
The Gen0 clock speed is 0.8 GHz, which isn’t much (it’s the original PlayStation 4’s speed). Gen1 is 0.911 GHz, which is still not much (it’s the PlayStation 4 Pro’s speed). Now, Gen2 is exciting at 2 GHz, which is quite high – it’d be beating AMD’s Navi 5700 GPU, and it’s also close to one of the top GPUs on the market at the moment, the NVidia RTX 2080. „BREAKING: This is PlayStation 5. According to this leak, the GPU will be clocked at an insane 2 GHz. This equates to 9.2 TF (teraflops) on the RDNA architecture. Or roughly 14 TF on the GCN Architecture aka over double the power of the Xbox One X. Almost [NVidia] RTX2080 power,” another tweet reads. Two more need to be mentioned: „Another link has been discovered adding credibility to the previous leak. Oberon codename uses an Ariel GPU. Ariel is linked to the Gonzalo APU. Oberon clocks of 800 MHz and 911 MHz are a that of PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro for backwards compatibility. It’s looking like [the] PlayStation 5! These are all codenames. The abridged version is this. Gonzalo is the PS5 codename. Oberon is the PS5 GPU codename. Ariel is PS5 CPU codename. Recently AMD has been testing and uploaded the Oberon at three clock speeds – 800 MHz, 911 MHz, and 2 GHz.”
Of course, all this is unofficial for now – according to rumours from yesterday, we have to wait until February to see the official reveal of the PlayStation 5.
