GameStop, one of the major United States game retailers, managed to hint at what Ubisoft is planning after several years of teasing by the French company, making us slightly annoyed in the process.
GameStop managed to hint at something new, discovered by Reddit. In case you can’t access GameStop’s page (because they think geoblocking is good – hint: it is NOT), let’s see what they wrote: „For the first time since the introduction of Splinter Cell game in 2002, after nine top-selling AAA+ titles, and with the 10th release on the horizon…” Wow.
Yeah, nine games came out so far. Let’s look at the list: Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell (2002), Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Pandory Tomorrow (2004), Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory (2005), Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Essentials (2006 – PSP), Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Double Agent (2006), Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Conviction (2010 – Ubisoft restarted its development), and Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Blacklist (2013). Yeah, that’s nine alright. Only seven if we counted right. What about the other two? Well, Sam Fisher showed up in Ghost Recon: Wildlands, and he was also an easter egg in Far Cry: New Dawn. Tricky. (Or, maybe they counted that mobile game as the 9th appearance instead of Far Cry…)
So GameStop is already hinting at a new game in the series, but we have yet to see when it happens, as Yves Guillemot, the CEO of Ubisoft, previously said that the return needs to happen at the right time (we wrote about it before). It might happen on the next-gen PlayStation (PlayStation 5) and Xbox (Xbox Project Scarlett)
We have to see the format, too – if they copy the formula of The Division of Far Cry, it will be something different than a classic Splinter Cell game.
