Coming soon is the 9 Monkeys of Shaolin, this old-fashioned game in which Wei Cheng, the humble fisherman, takes revenge for the deaths of his loved ones.
The eastern setting is having a huge role in recent months in the world of video games. Nioh, Sekiro or Ghost of Tsushima are some good examples. With a similar setting, but with a quite different cut, 9 Monkeys of Shaolin already has a release date and arrives ready to reinvent the beat’em up genre, in this case with the intention of reviving the kung fu movies of the seventies.
Buka Entertainment and Ravenscourt have confirmed that 9 Monkeys of Shaolin will be available on October 16 for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC, both in physical and digital formats. A game that will follow the line of the classic beat’em up where the only thing that matters is to incessantly smash the enemies that stand in our way.
According to the official synopsis of the game, the adventure will put us in the shoes of Wei Cheng, a humble Chinese fisherman, you have to avenge the death of your friends and family who were massacred in a pirate attack on your peaceful village. As the press release states “The game protagonist is quite a tough nut to crack as he knows the basics of ancient martial arts only mastered by legendary Shaolin monks. Get your trusty battle staff ready for a challenging adventure in Medieval China and for merciless fights with hordes of various enemies.”
The beat’em up shows that it never goes out of style, despite being a genre considered retro. The arrival of releases such as Streets of Rage 4, the new Battletoads or this game, 9 Monkeys of Shaolin is a sign that it is still very present.
