The Callisto Protocol: Dead Space Creator Is Back [VIDEO]

Glen Schofield is back, and he thinks single-player games are far from being down.

Krafton subsidiary Striking Distance Studios announced The Callisto Protocol at The Game Awards, and the studio is helmed by Schofield. Unsurprisingly, after Dead Space, it’s a single-player, story-driven survival horror title. „Set on Jupiter’s moon Callisto in the year 2320, The Callisto Protocol is a next-generation take on survival horror. The game challenges players to escape the maximum-security Black Iron Prison and uncover its terrifying secrets. A blend of horror, action, and immersive storytelling, the game aims to set a new bar for horror in interactive entertainment,” the game’s website says.

„We’ve built a world-class studio of passionate developers that is ready to once again tackle one of our all-time favourite genres—survival horror. We’re setting out to make one of the most terrifying games of all time, and we can’t wait to share more about The Callisto Protocol next year,” said Striking Distance Studios founder and CEO Glen Schofield in a statement. Seeing how he set the bar quite high with Dead Space at the now-dead Visceral Games, we have high hopes.

Our character’s neck has a green implant – it seems to be a hint at the game using a unique way to showcase the health, similarly how to Isaac’s spine had a coloured bar. Steve Papoutsis, the chief development officer, told PCGamer: „Interesting observation you made there. I can’t go into detail on that one, but you’ve got a keen eye. What we’re hoping to do is genuinely scare our players, and hopefully have them have memorable experiences while playing the game.” So we can expect a holo-style HUD in The Callisto Protocol.

„I’ve read a lot of articles on this, but from my perspective, there will always be a place for storytelling and narrative-driven games. One of the best forms of doing that is in the single-player type of experience that you can have. I’d say that while there’s a propensity for a lot of wonderful kinds of multiplayer-based games, there’s always going to be a spot for story-focused titles. That goes back to the genesis of storytelling; it’s been around for so long and I think it is going to persist. I’m very hopeful about that because I enjoy a great story,” Papoutsis told VG247.

Papoutsis added that they know The Callisto Protocol has to be a good game to have a good first impression for the players about Striking Distance: „Coming together as a new studio as Striking Distance and trying to put out our very first game, while we’re having a fun time doing it, everyone understands that the stakes are pretty high. There’s always going to be a level of pressure, but I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s the result of the decline in single-player games,” he said.

The Callisto Protocol will launch in 2022 on „consoles” and PC. It’s probably going to be on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC. But… is this game set in the PUBG
