Arkane Studios might be changing engines, as well as styles in one of its upcoming, as well as unannounced, games.
Arx Fatalis (PC, Xbox – 2002), Dark Messiah of Might and Magic (PC, Xbox 360 – 2006), KarmaStar (iOS – 2009), Dishonored (PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, then PlayStation 4, Xbox One – 2012), Dishonored 2 (PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC – 2016), Prey (PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC – 2017), Dishonored: Death of the Outsider (PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC – 2017), and Wolfenstein: Youngblood (PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC – 2019), Wolfenstein: Cyberpilot (PlayStation VR, PC VR – 2019; the two Wolfenstein titles were co-developed with MachineGames) – this is a varied list of titles the team has created, and Arkane is a few months away from launching Deathloop on PlayStation 5 and PC (it’s coming in May). The team, however, is thinking way ahead, though.
Lisa Charrier, Arkane Austin’s senior VFX artist, named a certain project on her LinkedIn page. No, we are not talking about the cancelled EverQuest Next game. Instead, it’s an „unannounced (fantasy) project in Unreal [Engine] 4.” She’s been working at Arkane’s American studio (as they have another one, located in Lyon, France) since 2018. As the team has been hiring more and more people for an AAA project, Charriere may be also working on it.
It’s interesting to see them use Unreal Engine 4, as Prey 2017 used CryEngine (but then again, Dishonored in 2012 used Unreal Engine 3), but seeing how they are working on a fantasy title, it’s plausible that they are dropping Crytek’s technology in favour of Epic Games’ engine.
But wait, Harvey Smith, the creative director of Dishonored, has recently moved back from Lyon to Austin, as we mentioned in the news! Why do we have a feeling that he is working on this game? It’s easy to tie the dots together, but we are merely speculating.
