A three-player Power Rangers game could have seen the light of day back in 2016, but unfortunately, it failed at the planning stage.

For anyone who grew up in the 90s, Power Rangers was a phenomenon, the American version of the Japanese Super Sentai series, released in 1993 and a worldwide hit. Since then, the series has gone on to have 27 seasons and numerous films and is still present in movies, television and video games. The franchise has changed hands over the decades and is now owned by Hasbro.

There have been many video games for the Power Rangers franchise, the most recent being Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid, a brawler action game for PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and Stadia. Years ago, however, there was an ambitious plan for the franchise that took its heroes into the open-world cooperative action genre, of which we’ve just seen some impressive concept art.

The history of video games is also a history of cancelled works, works that for whatever reason end up lost or, as in this case, stalled in development. Jason Bischoff, the former head of Saban, behind Power Rangers, shared a series of concept art and various interesting facts about the project on his Twitter account.

While early talks with Devs/Publishers was favorable, ultimately time + big shifts in our business saw conversations around Project Nomad peter out.

The development was titled Project Nomad in 2016 and was an open-world cooperative three-player action game that tried to approach the franchise’s story in a new way. Bischoff says it’s an “Arkham” Rangers or a Gotham Knight Rangers. However, Saban’s problems prevented the project from going ahead; there was no money to fund it. Although early discussions with developers and publishers were positive, they never made it past that stage. So all that remained were these few concept sketches, of which Bischoff has now shared some that reflect the game’s character.
