TECH NEWS – SONY: Unfortunately, we don’t have too many details, nor have sources provided any form of concrete evidence to prove the existence of Sony’s new Japanese studio. But like all rumours, it’s worth taking seriously…
According to insiders, Sony is setting up a new, big-budget studio in Japan, specialising in making triple-A titles that could appeal to a worldwide audience. The rumour comes from a source who had previously correctly predicted that Sony would acquire Returnal development studio Housemarque before the end of June.
Specifically, several sources have suggested that Sony is interested in creating a new IP on the same level as Capcom’s blockbusters Resident Evil, Monster Hunter or Devil May Cry, or Konami’s Metal Gear Solid. These games have appealed to Japanese audiences and Western audiences and have amassed a large fanbase worldwide over several decades. The source compares Sony’s studio to Microsoft‘s new studio, The Initiative, founded in 2018 to make “quadruple A-rated” video games.
The source also reveals that Sony will hire veteran developers from Capcom’s Resident Evil team and veteran developers from Square Enix and Konami. The rumoured unnamed studio has also been working on a new game since 2020. This also means that Sony was already planning to create the studio before reorganising the former Japan Studios around Team ASOBI earlier this year. According to another source, Sony plans to announce the new studio and the project in “coming months”.
PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst has previously mentioned that Sony will continue to invest in Japanese game studios, revealing “investing in [their] external development studio in Tokyo“. Whether this statement has anything to do with the rumoured new studio has not been confirmed. However, the information is in line with Sony’s recent efforts to get games from Japanese studios, so all the details so far point in one direction…
