Yahya Abdul-Mateen II plays Morpheus in The Matrix Resurrections

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has finally confirmed that he has indeed taken on the role of Morpheus in The Matrix Resurrections. We’re not too surprised, although we still feel sympathy for Laurence Fishburne.

Well, it’s official, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will play Morpheus in The Matrix Resurrections. After months of speculation and rumours circulating, the actor has now shared an incredibly cool picture of himself from the upcoming fourth Matrix movie on social media, alongside the straightforward, noble, mystery-solving caption “MORPHEUS”.

So, unless Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is playing some cruel joke on us, this confirms that he will indeed be playing the role of Morpheus, played so wonderfully by Laurence Fishburne in the original Matrix trilogy. Fishburne himself has previously revealed that he was not asked to return for the sequel, with the character now clearly appearing as a younger version of himself for reasons that will no doubt be explained in the film.

The rumours, some of which were hinted at in the recent trailer, claimed that Resurrection of the Matrix would feature a „younger version” of Morpheus, or more specifically, a „digital version” of the character. Whatever the result, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II certainly looks the part, as the image shared by the Candyman star shows him using two weapons at once to mow down the bad guys while also wearing stylish sunglasses this time around.

Abdul-Mateen recently gave us a sneak peek of the unexpected fourth Matrix instalment, comparing it to another recent legacy sequel role, Candyman. “It’s not that different. They’re both classics that people love. I have very high expectations for the roles. And it’s nice to be a part of that,” he explained before revealing that although Matrix 4 will contain many familiar elements, they will all be presented differently. “Of course, with that comes the opportunity to add our style to the characters. And we look forward to doing that with The Matrix in the same way, we did with Candyman. It’s all an opportunity to tell new, fresh stories and change the narrative to add a new perspective.”

As you can see in the trailer for The Matrix Resurrections, this reboot sequel is a continuation (or prequel? – ed.) to the story established in the first Matrix film in 1999. Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will once again play cinematic icons Neo and Trinity to expand their story that takes them back to the Matrix and deeper down the rabbit hole. The new mind-bending adventure, action-packed and epic in scale, is set in a familiar but even more provocative world where reality is more subjective than ever, and all it takes to see the truth is to free your mind.

The Resurrection of the Matrix stars Abdul-Mateen, Reeves and Moss, as well as Neil Patrick Harris, Priyanka Chopra, Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, Toby Onwumere, Max Riemelt, Eréndira Ibarra, Andrew Caldwell, Brian J. Smith, Ellen Hollman and Christina Ricci, who was recently announced as joining the highly anticipated project. Jada Pinkett Smith and Lambert Wilson will also return, reprising their roles from the previous trilogy.

The Warner Bros. Pictures film is scheduled to hit theatres on December 22, 2021. The film will also be streamed digitally on HBO Max in the US for one month from the same date.
