Microsoft has introduced Dolby Vision for games on the Xbox Series X/S, making them the first consoles to support game visuals. The feature is available for ten games for now, with hundreds more to come.
After testing the feature since March, Microsoft has introduced Dolby Vision gaming support on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles. Dolby Vision was first announced for consoles last September. So far, it supports ten games, and Dolby Vision for gaming will be added to more than 100 HDR games over time.
At the time of writing, F1 2021, Psychonauts 2, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Gears 5, Borderlands 3, Immortals Fenyx Rising, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Dirt 5 and Metro Exodus all support Dolby Vision.
According to Microsoft, Dolby Vision can support dynamic metadata, meaning users can experience “brighter highlights, sharper contrast and more vibrant colours” when the feature is enabled.
“There are more than 100 next-generation HDR titles with Dolby Vision optimized for Series X/S, and in the future, we’ll see more games like Halo Infinite that take full advantage of Dolby Vision,” explained Katie Slattery, Xbox program manager at Microsoft.
In addition, thousands of classic HDR10 and Auto HDR games will benefit from improved image quality thanks to the new Dolby Vision enhancements for Xbox Series X and S. Once enabled, your console will “deliver a rich, immersive experience unmatched by any other gaming console” automatically when you start playing the titles that support it. Somewhat obviously, Microsoft has noted that to best enjoy Dolby Vision; you need a Dolby Vision-enabled TV with Automatic Low Delay Mode (ALLM), Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) enabled.
You can check if your display supports Dolby Vision by pressing the Xbox button on your console to open the guide, then go to Settings > General > TV & Display Options > 4K TV details.
We did know that the technology would be coming “first to Xbox”, but when we can expect it on PlayStation is unknown at the time of writing.
