More than a year and a half after the release of DOOM Eternal, id Software is still working hard on the game, which has already released its two-part expansion, The Ancient Gods, and is supposed to complete the main character’s (Doom Slayer) story.
(And the franchise almost certainly won’t stop there: Microsoft is very likely already planning something new; and since Bethesda is also in their possession, nothing is stopping them from doing so… they also plan to share the id Tech engine with other Xbox Game Studios teams, which we’ve written about before.)
id Software announced on Twitter that the next update to DOOM Eternal would give the game, which launched last March, a version number of 6.66, in keeping with the game’s tone. This update will be released on Tuesday, October 26. It will bring Horde mode, a completely new take on Battlemode, and two new master maps to the game, the only one running on the id Tech 7 engine.
The game’s course changed in July when id Software announced the following: “We have seen and heard how many of you enjoy the range of gameplay and combat available in the expansions and master levels. We have decided to redirect our focus from Invasion Mode to creating a new single-player horde mode with these factors in mind. We’re confident this horde mode will offer you more of the diversity and challenge you’re looking for in the game. In addition, the team continues to work on a refresh of battlemode that includes a more competitive, rank-based structure, several gameplay and balance updates and another new map.”
Battlemode’s new details will likely be shared on Monday, a day before the update drops. Id Software has done a reasonable job in bringing the DOOM franchise to a modern audience.
