MOVIE NEWS – Writer-director Scott Derrickson and co-writer C. Robert Cargill have built a serious brand of their own with the low-budget, big-grossing horror Sinister (and its sequel, Sinister – The Cursed House). Now they’re back with The Black Phone, starring Ethan Hawke, as Sinister did.
The story is based on a short story by Joe Hill and is about a serial killer who kidnaps children, terrorising a small town. Apart from the killer, the black phone in the title is the other main character, but without spoiling the purpose, suffice it to say that the film was a huge hit at this year’s Fantastic Fest in the US, thanks mostly to Hawke’s chilling performance and the tension that is constantly turned up to the max, says CinemaBlend.
The Black Phone was made by Blumhouse Productions, which also made Sinister, and the countless other low-budget but big-selling horror/thrillers that have slowly been developed into profitable franchises. It’s not impossible that we’ll see more of the current intercom.
