The status of the CrossfireX Xbox-exclusive shooter is still tenuous. Remedy Entertainment handled its single-player story with their proprietary Northlight Engine… but maybe they’re regretting their involvement in the game.
We reported last week that CrossfireX’s launch on Xbox Series and Xbox One was poor, and Smilegate Entertainment has promised a ton of patches for the game starting in March, which has several criticisms (limited story scope for Remedy; barely any content and no sophisticated gameplay in Smilegate’s multiplayer…). The joke is that the game was not available to many Xbox Game Pass subscribers, even though CrossfireX was supposed to launch into it…
Since then, the situation hasn’t changed: the game is still not on Game Pass, but Microsoft has already announced that a solution to the problem is not far away, the gameplay is still problematic, and Sooro Boo (aka Mr Boo, the producer responsible for CrossfireX) has issued a rather strongly worded apology: “My name is Sooro Boo, or “Mr Boo” as many refer to me as, and I’m the Executive Producer of CrossfireX. We have inadvertently disappointed many of our players and fans that have stuck with us for a long time. You mean everything to us, and I felt that you deserved more than just a simple patch note, which is why I wanted to take this opportunity to apologize for the current state of the game personally.
There will always be bugs and various issues when it comes to video games, but we felt that CrossfireX’s current issues had to do more with the core fundamentals of the game and that it felt like we’ve betrayed the trust of our players. There is simply no excuse for this, which is why I wanted to make a personal apology and explain what the issues are and how we plan to overcome them. We will continue to be transparent and engage with you, our valued players, and hope to regain your trust again.”
Boo highlighted three issues that Smilegate is currently focusing on: there are oddities with the controller sensitivity; aiming down the sights of the CAR-4 weapon is not the best; and activating the Boogieman (which can be used to invade other players) has become too easy and is too powerful, so it needs to be rebalanced. More details are at this link.
From here, it will be a considerable challenge to get back up. OK, we’ve seen bigger resurrections (Hello Games and No Man’s Sky did this, albeit with a single-player adventure), but Smilegate has a steep hill to climb…
