The PlayStation 5, Xbox Series launch for Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online didn’t go smoothly.
Grand Theft Auto V: Expanded and Enhanced – this is the name you need to remember if you want to find the newest GTA V re-release. After the PlayStation 3/Xbox 360 original, there was the PlayStation 4/Xbox One version, then the PC port, and now, the PlayStation 5/Xbox Series version, which lets you transfer your Grand Theft Auto Online save from your previous generation console. But if we do that, we shouldn’t try to relaunch the online game on our 2013 console. GTA Online became such a cash cow for the Rockstar/Take-Two duo that they didn’t make a single-player/offline DLC for Grand Theft Auto V…
Rockstar wrote in a Q&A, “You can migrate your profile through either the GTA Online Landing Page or Pause Menu once you have signed in to the Rockstar Games Social Club on your preferred console. Important: Once your progress has been transferred from PlayStation 4 or Xbox One to PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S, your migrated profile will no longer be available on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. Additionally, profiles cannot be transferred between PlayStation 4 or Xbox One to PC.”
There is one factor we haven’t mentioned so far. Grand Theft Auto Online does not have cross-play. Even within a console family (PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5; Xbox One, Xbox Series), there is no way to play with each other. So those who don’t switch with us will have to say goodbye, which may not be a good thing for everyone. And there was a flaw: those who would have made the leap forward on console didn’t all make it, especially if they’d already ported their character over to PC at one point. Rockstar posted about this on Twitter yesterday afternoon.
However, a couple of hours later, Rockstar tweeted: “The issue blocking GTA Online profile migration of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One accounts that were previously migrated to PC has been addressed, and that migration is now working as intended. Please note that GTA Online profiles on PC cannot be migrated to PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S.” By the way, Grand Theft Auto V: Expanded and Enhanced and the standalone Grand Theft Auto Online launch today on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series.
