The new Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry and Ghost Recon games are coming further out than Ubisoft had planned, according to sources at Kotaku. Bloomberg recently reported that Ubisoft is preparing for a possible acquisition, with several well-funded companies showing interest in the developer. To add to this news with its own report, Kotaku spoke to several senior Ubisoft developers who revealed that years of infighting have led to a potential sale.

Back in February, Bloomberg reported that Ubisoft was planning to turn the Assassin‘s Creed Valhalla expansion featuring Basim into a standalone game instead of a full-fledged mainline installment. The company reportedly has no new major release coming in the near future, and they needed a plug-in game. Now Kotaku is reporting that Far Cry and Ghost Recon will suffer the same fate, as their next installments won’t be released as soon as Ubisoft would have liked. To top it all off, Beyond Good and Evil 2 is all but dead, and rumour has it that the money spent on its development so far has been spent.

But Ubisoft’s troubles do not end with the aforementioned development problems. According to reports, there are no relatives left in the Guillemot family to take over the business after CEO Yves Guillemot’s son Charlie passed away last year. This explains why Yves, who famously fought off a hostile takeover attempt by Vivendi, is now attracting buyers. In addition, Ubisoft has been rocked by allegations of nepotism, workplace abuse and sexual harassment, leading to a mass exodus of talent. As Kotaku pointed out, Ubisoft’s shares stood at $110 in July 2018. Now they are selling for $41 each. Whoever is going to buy Ubisoft is going to get a pretty big discount.

Interestingly, Ubisoft employees interviewed by Kotaku claim that the company has been preparing for the sale for years. It has reportedly been working with several consulting firms to audit the business over the past few years, which employees say was done to prepare the books for the sale. There is still a lot to unravel here, but it seems that the Ubisoft acquisition is only a matter of time.
