MOVIE NEWS – Black Bird, the Apple TV+ series developed by Dennis Lehane, stars Taron Egerton, Paul Walter Hauser and Ray Liotta in one of the last roles of his life.

 

 

Apple TV+ has released the official trailer for Black Bird, a limited thriller series starring Taron Egerton and Paul Walter Hauser. Based on an incredible true story, Black Bird follows high school football star turned convict James Keene (Egerton) as he befriends alleged serial killer Larry Hall (Hauser) in order to get a confession and secure an early release. Black Bird also stars the late Ray Liotta in one of his last acting roles as a former police officer and father of Egerton’s character.

Designed by acclaimed writer Dennis Lehane (Mystic River, Gone Baby Gone, Shutter Island), Black Bird is based on the 2011 non-fiction novel In With the Devil, which was put to paper by James Keene and Hillel Levin.

Black Bird will premiere on Apple TV+ on 8 July.

The official synopsis for the series reads:

“Inspired by actual events, when high school football hero and decorated policeman’s son Jimmy Keene (Taron Egerton) is sentenced to 10 years in a minimum security prison, he is given the choice of a lifetime — enter a maximum-security prison for the criminally insane and befriend suspected serial killer Larry Hall (Paul Walter Hauser), or stay where he is and serve his full sentence with no possibility of parole.”

“Keene quickly realizes his only way out is to elicit a confession and find out where the bodies of several young girls are buried before Hall’s appeal goes through. But is this suspected killer telling the truth? Or is it just another tale from a serial liar? This dramatic and captivating story subverts the crime genre by enlisting the help of the very people put behind bars to solve its mysteries.”

Although Ray Liotta seems to be playing a supporting role, it’s always a pleasure to see the legendary star of the Big Tops. And Liotta definitely brings the intensity to his role as Taron Egerton struggles to choose between easy survival in a minimum-security prison or partnering with a serial killer in a facility for criminals. Paul Walter Hauser is also impressive as the creepy Larry Hall. He reportedly lost 40 pounds to play the character.

Black Bird also stars Greg Kinnear and Sepideh Moafi and is directed by Michaël R. Roskam, Jim McKay and Joe Chapelle.
