The Alters: Very Abstract & Creative Sci-Fi Game In The Making! [VIDEO]

In The Alters, you have to solve problems with the help of your protagonist’s alter-egos in one of the most original game overlays in recent times.

11 Bit Studios has delivered one of the surprises of the PC Gaming Show with The Alters, a game that shows us how our lives could have turned out if we had made certain choices differently. The creators of This War of Mine and Frostpunk have come up with a very creative idea, and it looks like the execution will be pretty good too.

In the game, you take on the role of Jan Dolski, a worker who suddenly finds himself on a remote planet, alone and abandoned, knowing that he needs help to survive.

With no one to help him, he has no choice but to turn to his “alter-egos”: versions of himself that at some point in his life made different choices than the ones he chose and now have different abilities and ways of dealing with situations.

This is the game’s basic premise, which the Polish studio has been working on behind closed doors for the past two years using the Unreal Engine. The Alters’ director Tomasz Kisilewicz said that unlike having a clone of them, The Alters’ alter-egos would require players to know how to use and manage them and their various abilities in order to succeed in the game.

The Alters seeks to explore the concept of “what if?”

It also adds that each of them will have a distinct personality that is the result of the choices they might have made in the other life that we did not experience, and from there, it will be up to the player to determine how the plot and relationships with our ‘Alters’ evolve. Essentially, 11 Bit Studios aims to present us with the dilemma we have faced so many times in our inner selves but have also seen in countless works of science fiction: to literally explore the question of “what if… we had taken the job we refused for another?” or “what if I had gotten married?”

Overall, it’s a game that focuses on the outcomes of those small, trivial decisions that are sometimes insignificant at first but later turn out to be decisive for the course of one’s life. So far, apart from the trailer and the announcement, nothing else has been revealed about this mysterious title, but it’s certainly a thought-provoking gameplay proposition, so we’ll be watching for more details on this strange game.
