Stranger Things Takes it All: The Netflix Series Easily Beat Obi-Wan Kenobi and The Boy Overseas

MOVIE NEWS – The first episodes of season 4 of Netflix superstar Stranger Things have broken all-time streaming records in the US in just one week.

Today, the final two episodes of Stranger Things’ fourth season, which are a gigantic length, finally debuted. The season finale was so well received that Netflix temporarily threw in the towel around the time of the premiere, and in the US, the stats show that the series easily beat Obi-Wan Kenobi and its most-watched first episodes.

We previously reported that Netflix’s statistics showed that the first episode of Stranger Things’ fourth season made it the service’s most-watched English-language series. And according to Nielsen, the US media analytics company, the Duffer Brothers’ series set a record on the streaming front in the US in a single week, with the fourth season of course a big contributor to this, as it also helped to (re)watch the previous three seasons in huge numbers. So, between 30 May and 5 June, a total of 7.2 billion minutes of Netflix’s sci-fi and horror series were watched overseas. Nielsen has been compiling streaming statistics since 2020, but no series has ever produced such a high number.

Of course, there’s no shame in Obi-Wan Kenobi, which debuted on the same day as the fourth season of its Netflix series on 27 May, although only the first two episodes were available immediately, with episodes being released weekly on Wednesdays thereafter. In any case, between 30 May and 5 June, the three episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi generated a total of 958 million minutes of Disney+ viewing, making it the fourth most watched streaming content during the period. The premiere week (23-29 May) was no different, with the first two episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi generating over 1 billion minutes and the first seven episodes of Stranger Things season four generating over 5.1 billion.

The Boys wasn’t far behind, with a total of 949 million minutes watched between 30 May and 5 June. The third season of Amazon Prime Video’s series The Boys arrived on 3 June with three episodes. The runner-up was The Legendary Beasts: Secrets of Dumbledore, a film that dominated the top 10, which finished sixth with 758 million minutes. By the way, the top three positions in the top 10 are dominated by Netflix content, so the service has a chance to escape the slack it has been in due to the downward trend in its subscriber numbers.

Nielsen, by the way, looks at HBO Max, Netflix, Prime Video, Apple TV+, Hulu and Disney+ content on TV sets, and excludes mobile content (via apps) from its statistics. The full top list can be viewed below.
