SEGA Still Promises To Fix Sonic Origins’ Bugs

Sonic Origins was one of the most overlooked re-releases (three Mega Drive/Genesis and one Mega CD/SEGA CD game…).

We wrote about Sonic Origins a while back that the founder of the studio responsible for the remaster, Headcannon Games, was not happy with how much of a mess SEGA had released. We should explain: Sonic Origins contains four games. Sonic 1 and 2’s remasters were put together by Christian Whitehead and Headcannon, while the remaster of Sonic CD was done by Whitehead using his Retro Engine. These were then developed and coded in-house by SEGA.

The result is, we’ve written, problematic. Almost a month has passed since then, and the Japanese publisher still has to placate its rightfully critical community by saying that more bugs will be fixed! Katie Chrzanowski, social media manager for the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, wrote on Twitter, “Hey! Thanks for the patience! The team’s been listening and working on fixing various issues. We’ll get some official messaging out once we have more info for everyone.”

So we don’t even know when that patch will be released, but there are some things to fix. Sonic 3 & Knuckles has collision detection bugs. All four games have glitches around sounds (which are muffled in some cases), widescreen resolutions have bugs around boundaries, and Tails’ AI is weird.

A modder, Xanman, initially worked on a big mod for Sonic Origins. BetterOrigins was going to fix several bugs and glitches… then eventually stopped. They wrote, “Hey, so we decided to stop the development of this project. After digging into the files for this game, it’s become clearer that this game is absolute sh_t.” So it could be a big problem if they just left the whole thing behind.

The saddest part is that Sonic Origins means that the original games are no longer available on Steam, for example. Instead, here’s the Denuvo-riddled collection. No comment.
