Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth Arrives Nearly A Quarter Year Later!

Square Enix needs more time to bring Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth to PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

In a statement on Twitter, the Japanese publisher tries to explain the delay (but not with much success, we might add…): “As we celebrate the upcoming launch of Valkyrie Elysium, we, unfortunately, need a bit more time for Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth to improve the quality of the title and have decided to move the release date to December 22, 2022.

For those who have pre-ordered Valkyrie Elysium Digital Deluxe Edition from the PlayStation Store, you will receive your copy of Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth on December 22, 2022. Thank you for all of your support. We look forward to you playing Valkyrie Elysium from September 29 and Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth when it launches December 22,” Square Enix wrote. So their reasoning is the usual “more time for quality”, but it’s worth a look behind the scenes here.

Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth is a tricky game. The first in the series, Valkyrie Profile, which was already based on Norse mythology, was released for PS1 in Japan on December 22, 1999 (clever… timed to coincide with an anniversary) and in North America on August 29, 2000. There was no PAL version. An upgraded port of this game came out in Japan and North America in 2006, then in Europe and Australia in 2007 for PSP. (There were also iOS and Android ports of the game: these were released in 2018.)

So it wouldn’t be surprising if there were problems around Sony, as Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth will be released exclusively for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 on December 22. What’s wrong? Is it just that the emulation of the PSP game isn’t working correctly? After all, they’ve essentially delayed a PSP game by almost three months. It’s funny if the problem lies with the ‘blues’ and not Square Enix, who have recently taken an interest in blockchain and NFT.

If they were to release it on PC, surely they’d put Denuvo in it since it’s in Valkyrie Elysium…
