Amy Winehouse Almost Scored One of the James Bond Films Before Her Tragic Death

MOVIE NEWS – Amy Winehouse, who died tragically young, almost provided the music for Quantum of Solace, according to a new documentary called The Sound of 007. The James Bond producer recalls a “very sad” meeting with the pop star who died young.

The late singer Amy Winehouse was once close to providing music for the James Bond film franchise, but as producer Barbara Broccoli details in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly , it wasn’t meant to be. Before her death in 2011, Winehouse was at one point recording the Bong theme for the 2008 film Quantum of Solace. This is also the subject of the new documentary The Sound of 007, which will debut on Prime Video on October 5, the 60th anniversary of the original Bond film, Dr. No.

Speaking with EW, Broccoli revealed more details about what happened with Winehouse and Quantum of Solace. Broccoli recalls having a meeting with Winehouse about the song’s plans, and while the legendary singer’s genius and talent were evident, it was also clear that she was in a difficult position at the time. As Broccoli says, it was “very, very sad” for him to see it.

“Well, it was a very, very sad meeting, he wasn’t at his best and my heart really went out to him. He was very fragile emotionally and you know, you could understand how he was able to create such touching material because he had very deep feelings and it was very, very tragic. What an incredible talent, what an incredible voice, what an incredible person he was, and I remember that very, very sadly.”

Jack White and Alicia Keys replaced Amy Winehouse

Her personal problems affected her work, and Winehouse eventually left Quantum of Solace, necessitating another musician or two to come in and provide the theme. This was later given to Jack White and Alicia Keys, who collaborated on a duet in the form of the divisive song “Another Way to Die”. Over the summer, White spoke on Conan O’Brien’s Needs a Friend podcast about what it was like to be on the project at the last minute when Winehouse dropped out, as well as what people thought of his duet with Keys.

“To this day, it’s still a hit. People always say you either love it or you hate it. This song… some people really hate it and some people really love it. It’s nowhere in the middle. It’s so weird … I got in because Amy Winehouse didn’t show up at the tapings or she didn’t perform the song that was asked of her. So it was like, ‘We’re running out of time, we need somebody else…’ And I thought : “Oh, that’s great because now I get away with murder. I’m going to put things in this song that would never be approved.’ And it happened… The music director refused to do anything. He tried to convince me to turn it into a ballad or something”.

There’s more to know about The Sound of 007, which fans can watch on October 5 on Prime Video. On the same day, all 25 James Bond films will be made available for a limited time to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the film franchise.
