Robbie Coltrane, the Legendary Harry Potter Actor Has Died Aged 72

MOVIE NEWS – Robbie Coltrane, the actor legend of Harry Potter and two James Bond films, died in the hospital near his home in Larbert, Scotland.

 

Robbie Coltrane dies aged 72 According to Deadline. The actor was known for his roles in the Harry Potter franchise, James Bond and Cracker. After two years of illness, Coltrane died at a hospital near his home in Larbert, Scotland.

His best-known role was in Harry Potter, where he played Rubeus Hagrid, the half-giant, half-wizard who constantly helped Potter and his friends. He played the character in all eight films, from 2001’s Philosopher’s Stone to 2011’s Deathly Hallows Part 2. He also made a name for himself in the TV world playing forensic psychologist Dr. Edward “Fitz” in the murder drama Cracker, for which he won three consecutive BAFTA Awards for Best Actor. He also appeared in the James Bond films The World Is Not Enough and Goldeneye, where he played Valentin Zukovsky alongside Pierce Brosnan and Denise Richards.

Coltrane was born Anthony Robert McMillan in Rutherglen, Scotland in 1950, and adopted the stage name Coltrane later in his career. Her earliest roles include roles in Flash Gordon and Mona Lisa. Cracker brought Coltrane to fame in the 1990s, before he made his debut opposite Daniel Radcliffe in 2001’s Harry Potter. Two children survive the actor.

Robbie Coltrane’s role as Rubeus Hagrid is undoubtedly the biggest role of his career, and the actor has acknowledged it. During the HBO Max special Harry Potter: Return to Hogwarts, the actor talked about his time in the franchise and why he believes the films will carry on his legacy.

“It’s the end of an era. Ten years of my life. My children grew up during that time.” He continued, explaining what the films will mean for generations to come. “The legacy of the films is that my children’s generation will show them to their children… So they may still be watching them 50 years from now… I won’t be here, unfortunately, but Hagrid will”.

Of course, fans who grew up on Harry Potter will continue to show the films to their children, as Coltrane said. His memory will always live on in immensely popular films. Coltrane recently reprises his role in the fantasy short film Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure in 2019, and has written an autobiographical book, Coltrane in a Cadillac. May the fantastic actor who graced the screen for several decades rest in peace.
