MOVIE NEWS – In his announcement video, Henry Cavill says he has “a lot to be thankful for” in the DCEU, where he is returning (WARNING, this article contains spoilers for Black Adam!)
Fans have been eagerly anticipating Henry Cavill returning to the DCEU. His character has been totally underused for the last few years. Cavill first appeared as Superman in 2013’s Man of Steel and reprised his role in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League.
After a five-year hiatus (not counting his appearance in Zack Snyder’s Justice League), Cavill returned to his beloved role in a post-credit scene in Black Adam.
After a significant cameo, the actor is reportedly preparing to return to the role for the long haul. Meanwhile, DC’s Expanded Universe is trying to find itself after a few lacklustre years. Plus, a Man of Steel sequel is reportedly in the works, which would provide a much-needed solo movie for the character. Cavill officially announced his return on Monday, following the $67 million debut of Black Adam over the weekend. In an Instagram post, he detailed why he made the decision he did:
“Hey everyone, I wanted to wait until the weekend was over before posting this because I wanted to give you all a chance to watch Black Adam,” Cavill explained to his fans.
“But now that plenty of you have, I wanted to make it official that I am back as Superman. And the image you see on this post and what you saw in Black Adam are just a very small taste of things to come. So there’s a lot to be thankful for, and I’ll get to that in time.” He continues, “But I wanted to thank you guys most of all for your support and thank you for your patience. I promise it will be rewarded.”
Henry Cavill in the Black Adam post-credit scene was far from a secret
Unfortunately, many fans learned of the Man of Steel’s Black Adam performance before seeing the film. Dwayne Johnson, who plays the title character in the film, hinted at Cavill’s appearance weeks before the film’s release. Then, in early October, details of the end-credits scene were leaked, making Cavill’s long-awaited return almost sure.
All of this could, of course, lead to the inevitable showdown between Black Adam and Superman. The fight would be a huge blockbuster, as audiences are eagerly awaiting the return of the Man of Steel. Especially if he were to star alongside Johnson’s anti-hero for an entire feature film. For now, however, audiences can see their brief appearance in Black Adam while the actors and Warner Bros. management decide how they want to move forward with the DCEU. The next film in the shared universe is Shazam! Fury of the Gods will be released on March 17, 2023.
