Death threats and a racist message have been sent to a person who reviewed the upcoming God of War: Ragnarok game.
Reviews of God of War: Ragnarok are now available ahead of the game’s release later this week. But one reviewer has received a death threat over his review of Sony Santa Monica’s new game. The thoughts of Ragnarok are almost invariably positive, making it one of the highest-rated new game releases of the year. It is also the highest-rated first-party PlayStation 5 game to date. Most reviewers agreed that God of War: Ragnarok is a landmark release. But there is one standout review.
Many God of War: Ragnarok reviews awarded the game a perfect or near-perfect score, with one exception.
While the main IGN website gave God of War Ragnarok one of its many 10/10 ratings, IGN’s Korean branch gave the game a 6/10, its lowest score ever.
Video games are subjective. They are a different experience for everyone, despite all their objectively interpretable positive or negative qualities. However, one angry fan thought a difference of opinion gave him the right to send a death threat to the reviewer.
Bae Sang Hyun, a Korean game developer and filmmaker who occasionally writes reviews for IGN Korea, wrote the review of Ragnarok. In the end, he gave the game a score of 6/10. The review’s assessment is basically that the new God of War is too similar to the 2018 game. It feels more like DLC than a full-fledged sequel. Many disagree with this opinion. However, nothing gives anyone the right to call the writer of an opinion they don’t like a “Korean lowlife”.
The commenter added, “I’ll beat your ass and humble you so good that you wouldn’t even dare write this s***. Imma kill you.”
Unfortunately, this is far from the first time a death threat has been sent over a video game. In fact, death threats have been commonplace in the games industry for years. Sometimes they are aimed at critics who disagree with the consensus, and other times at the game developers themselves. For example, CD Projekt Red, the developer of Cyberpunk 2077, received death threats after the game was postponed. And Laura Bailey, Abby in The Last of Us 2, received death threats from fans who didn’t like her character.
The anonymity of the internet means that death threats and general harassment are unlikely to stop anytime soon. Unfortunately, it’s only a matter of time before another player in the games industry receives death threats because of their work or opinions.

Here is the original Korean full text of the review. For English speakers, I recommend you to read it yourself using Google Translation. That may not be accurate, but it will help to reduce misunderstandings. Again, I respect all opinions and positions.https://t.co/kvoKnmj2Ch
