Two games from Thirdverse are jumping onto Sony’s next-generation VR headset.
The first is X8, an internal-view shooter that will not only be released on Steam and Oculus Store but will also be available on the PlayStation Store, as a PlayStation VR2 port is in the works. The game is being developed by the Japanese company’s San Francisco-based studio.
Here’s the game’s overview: “A digital cataclysm has forced a reboot of all contemporary shooters. Heroes from different first-person shooter franchises cross paths with their standard ancestor game engine. They will compete to restore their source worlds, rebuilding their path home. In X8, players embody a variety of distinct heroes who battle alongside and against each other using interactive abilities and unique weapons. Each hero can access three abilities: Instant, Basic and Ultimate. Each character has hero-specific items offering situational advantages. Additionally, heroes can access an extensive arsenal of weapons, armor, and items unique to their character. Players can acquire dozens of abilities and customize each hero’s loadout before the beginning of each battle round. Additional armaments can be purchased with funds available in subsequent rounds.
Players are divided into two teams (up to five-versus-five) and play up to 16 rounds, where attackers place a detonation device called “The Extrapolator.” Defenders attempt to disrupt deployment or defuse the Extrapolator. Attackers must place the team’s Extrapolator in set locations on the map to enable the detonation process. Once placed, the attackers must successfully defend the extrapolation process as the timer counts down to zero. Defenders must prevent deployment of the opposing team’s Extrapolator, deactivate the extrapolator within 30 seconds using “The Defuser,” or eliminate all attackers to conclude the round. As a rule, each player can only launch one, so eliminating another team will also determine the round winners.”
Then there’s Altair Breaker without its allegedly stylistic all-caps name, also by Japan’s Thirdverse. It’s been available on Steam and the Oculus Store for Quest and Rift since August 18. The PlayStation VR2 port will include all content until the game’s Event Horizon update.
Here’s this game’s overview: “Enter the world of Altair and fight against the army of LAWS (Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems) left behind roaming around Vastus Isle in this map-based sword-fighting virtual reality game. Team up with your friends and experience the feeling of transcendent battles in virtual reality. Set on the floating island of Vastus Isle, this place was once used as a magic workshop. The place is now in ruins and exploited to run experiments with AI. Take on battles to push back the army of LAWS roaming around and help Stella, the humanoid AI in charge of Altair, maintain peace on Vastus Isle.
Move from map to map while enjoying the feeling of transcendent sword fighting. Take advantage of your surroundings by climbing and gliding to easily take on enemies. Experience a wide range of attacks only possible in virtual reality, such as Shockwaves and Surge Mode. A simplified and intuitive user interface was developed to increase the sense of virtual reality and not interrupt the game flow. The Tablet will be your central hub to change equipment, check your character’s status, and more. Team up with three other players from all around the world and take on enemies with your friends. The game supports cross-play between Quest 2 and PC virtual reality and features a native voice chat system. Recommended for players who want to experience stylish sword-fighting action and feel like the hero in an anime world. (Please Note: The game is always online. You need an internet connection.)”
Neither X8 nor the PlayStation VR2 port of Altair Breaker has a precise release date.
