This Is the Game Every Dev Dreams of Making – Gears of War Veterans Join Neon Giant for New Sci-Fi FPS

“It’s the kind of game every developer wants to work on.” That’s how the creators of The Ascent describe Project Impact, their mysterious new FPS. With veteran devs from Gears of War backing the project and a vision for a “living world,” Neon Giant is aiming to raise the bar with their next big title—even if it doesn’t have a name yet.

After finding success with The Ascent, a slick cyberpunk action-RPG viewed from an isometric perspective, Neon Giant is sticking with their signature visual flair but taking it in a new direction. Their latest project, tentatively called Project Impact, is a first-person shooter that promises to deliver an experience that’s as exciting to build as it is to play.

There’s still a lot under wraps, but recently released screenshots hint at a more grounded and tech-heavy world, moving away from the neon-drenched environments of their previous game. Arcade Berg, the studio’s creative director, told PC Gamer: “We want players to feel like they’re truly part of a living, breathing world.”

Neon Giant Keeps It Small and Personal with Project Impact

The studio’s approach hasn’t changed: Neon Giant is still made up of just over 20 people, working without rigid hierarchies or job titles. Tor Frick, co-founder of the studio, explained: “Nobody here is just a manager. Everyone is hands-on in the creative and technical side of things. If we’re going to build a game, we’re going to build it together.”

Even after being acquired by Krafton—the publisher behind PUBG—Neon Giant retains full creative control. The studio isn’t being relegated to a support team, nor are they taking on outsourced work. They’re maintaining their hand-crafted approach, using Krafton’s resources to dream bigger and take bolder risks.

There’s still no official word on when—or where—Project Impact will launch. But anticipation is already brewing. With clear immersive sim ambitions and team members who’ve worked on iconic franchises like Wolfenstein, Bulletstorm, and Gears of War, this could be one of the most unique FPS titles in years.
