MOVIE NEWS – Nintendo is up to something with the burly gorilla as he gets a facelift…
The Super Mario Bros. Movie has received its second trailer, and it’s just as beautiful as the first, sticking to the source material while still managing to rise to the faster, more emotional level expected on the big screen. (It’s a little detrimental to the overall picture that Mario’s voice in the games for decades, Charles Martinet, wasn’t asked to reprise the role as Chris Pratt voices him…) The first video only showed the mustachioed plumber and Bowser, but the big N has corrected that omission with the new trailer.
Courtesy of Nintendo and Universal Pictures, several characters appear in the video embedded below. We get to see Luigi, Princess Peach (who won’t be in her usual role this time so that she won’t be kidnapped…), and Donkey Kong, who looks different. Luckily for him, his visuals haven’t deteriorated, so Illumination (Despicable Me; Sing) has handled the Nintendo property reasonably. The video also hints that Mario might find himself in a gokart on Rainbow Road with galaxy moves. Are they referencing Super Mario Galaxy and Mario Kart?
However, Shigeru Miyamoto also made an appearance at the Nintendo Direct (where only the movie was discussed), highlighting Donkey Kong’s 40th anniversary and showing off the new design. Why would the big N do this if it wasn’t for a new Donkey Kong game? Donkey Kong Country Returns: Tropical Freeze was released in 2014 for Wii U and then in 2018 for Switch. Since then, a console generation has passed, so it’s time for something new. Maybe Tropical Freeze developers Retro Studios are working on it… but they’ve also got Metroid Prime 4.
Super Mario Bros. Movie debuts in North America on April 7. Anna Taylor-Joy voices Peach, Charlie Day voices Luigi, Jack Black voices Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key voices Toad, Seth Rogen voices Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen voices Cranky Kong, Sebastian Maniscalco voices Spike, and Kevin Michael Richardson voices Kamek.
