Microsoft has revealed the Xbox Games with Gold free games for January 2023, which Xbox Live Gold and Game Pass Ultimate subscribers can play for free.

Microsoft has announced the new Xbox Games with Gold games for January 2023, revealing Iris Fall and Autonauts as the two free games that Xbox Live Gold and Game Pass Ultimate subscribers can enjoy this month. While previously an Xbox Live Gold subscription included two games for Xbox 360 and two for Xbox One, Microsoft recently abandoned the Xbox 360 era and only offered games from the two latest console generations.

In September 2022, Microsoft stopped offering free Xbox 360 games to Xbox Live Gold and Game Pass Ultimate subscribers. It ended the program by offering the highly successful Portal 2 for a limited time. Since then, Games with Gold has been giving gamers a selection of games available on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S consoles, with a new list of free games available on consoles updated every two weeks, with one release at the beginning of the month and another in the middle of the month.

January 2023 will be no exception, as Microsoft has revealed that Iris Fall and Autonauts will be available to Xbox Live Gold and Game Pass Ultimate subscribers as part of Xbox Games with Gold. Iris Fall will be available between January 1 and 31, while Autonauts will join Xbox Games with Gold on January 16 and leave the service on February 15.

Iris Fall is a puzzle adventure game with a unique art style that plays with lights and shadows. A young girl named Iris awakens from a dream to follow a black cat into a dilapidated theatre, where she discovers a strange, black-and-white cartoon-style universe. As she makes her way through this labyrinth and solves its mysteries, Iris discovers that the world has some kind of hidden connection to itself. The entire gameplay is based on the interaction between light and shadow, with players able to switch between these two settings to unravel the story’s plot and discover all that Iris Fall has to offer.

Autonauts is an agricultural simulation game in which players must colonize alien planets and use robots to trigger automated production to take advantage of the planets’ resources. Behind the cute low-poly graphics, Autonauts offers various tools to manage the automation process efficiently and uses a special visual programming language to teach the robots to perform tasks. While this language is easy to learn for new players, it leaves room for more complex commands to bring additional complexity for those who already understand how to control operations on their planets.
