Dead Space remake is a very good game and if you don’t have a next gen console you should play it on PC. I myself was hoping that I might be able to run it on my recently acquired Steam Deck. Unfortunately, the publisher EA said that the remake does not support the Steam Deck, and this is supported by my own experience.

Steam Deck listed Dead Space’s support level as unknown when I received the review key for the remake, and I gave it a shot out of great optimism. The game protested this decision in every possible way. It got stuck on the initial loading screen several times, and when I finally got to the intro scene and opening level of the game, it kept stuttering even on the lowest graphics settings. Despite all that, I thought I might be able to pull it off… but then after the first enemies appeared, I entered an elevator and every time I tried it either crashed or froze permanently. Finally, I played the game on my desktop machine, where – with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 graphics card – it worked perfectly. Some dedicated Steam Deck users might find a way to run the game after launch, but it sure doesn’t look like it was designed for the device.

It’s not too surprising that a next-gen console game can’t run on a handheld PC, but the issue wasn’t decided before release, and the Steam requirements for the remake aren’t too intense either. (You’ll need an AMD RX 5700 or GeForce GTX 1070 graphics card and a solid-state drive, among other things.) For now, if you really want Dead Space on the Steam Deck, you can still go back to the original 2008 game.
