MOVIE NEWS – The thriller-comedy Cocaine Bear, in which an American black bear consumes a bag of white powder and starts running amok, is already being referred to as a cult film.

The story was inspired by a real event: in 1985, a bear actually ate cocaine dropped from a plane by drug smugglers. The poor couple died of an overdose, but in the film they further thought about the basic case and played with the idea of what will happen if the predator turns from cocaine into a top beast and tears apart everyone who gets in its way.

The film’s screenwriter, Jimma Warden, revealed to Dexerto what sources he drew from for the true story. One is Jurassic Park, as the parallel lends itself. A dangerous animal gets loose in a natural environment, it’s not a T-Rex, it’s a drug-addled bear, but it’s at least as dangerous. There are also children who run away from the storm, and lame adults, but they run in vain.

The other source of inspiration was the world of the Coen brothers. The Oscar®-winning creative couple regularly populate their stories with eccentric characters, and so did Warden. Cocaine Bear is full of strange characters, from ambidextrous police officers to sloppy nature hikers to drug couriers who deserve a better fate, and to the credit of the screenwriter, some of them survive.
