Did Master Chief Deliver Disappointing Performance on the PlayStation 5?

Rumor has it that Halo: Campaign Evolved is not performing particularly well on Sony’s console.

Rhys Elliott of Alinea Analytics published a list of the ten best-selling games on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 over the past month. Microsoft titles dominated the rankings, although their sales performance varied significantly. July’s biggest surprise was the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops II for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. Fans had long awaited the release of these 2010 and 2012 games on the newer PlayStation platforms, but perhaps not even Activision anticipated such success.

According to Alinea’s data, the impact of these simple ports, priced at $40 but currently available to PlayStation Plus subscribers for $20, was explosive. The two games sold a combined total of 11.2 million copies, with Black Ops II accounting for 8.2 million of those. In terms of revenue, this amounts to approximately $435 million generated by two older ports in less than a month. This is excellent news for Microsoft, although Sony will also be pleased, as it received a $130 million bonus thanks to the well-known 30% platform fee.

PlayStation players were focused on nostalgia this month, and they also responded positively to the release of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Redux. Ubisoft’s game sold 1.6 million copies on PlayStation 5 in July, securing third place on the list of the month’s ten best-selling games. The rest of the list consists of sports games, including EA Sports FC 26 and EA College Football 27, evergreen titles such as Grand Theft Auto V and Minecraft, the recently released Palworld, and finally Halo: Campaign Evolved.

This is a genuine remake and marks the first time the Halo series has been released on PlayStation. Despite that, it sold only 351,000 copies in July. Halo: Campaign Evolved therefore represents the unfortunate other side of Microsoft’s success, although the game underperformed not only on PlayStation 5 but also struggled on its primary platforms. It sold 212,000 copies on Steam and approximately 900,000 on Xbox, combining console sales with the Xbox app. That is fewer than 1.5 million copies, and even worse, the game had virtually no competition.

With the franchise’s future plans reportedly still up in the air, the future of the Halo series also appears rather uncertain…
