MOVIE NEWS – The political thriller follows a low-level FBI agent and a computer genius who get involved in a conspiracy that reaches the White House. The series creator, Shawn Ryan, told how he had to make difficult decisions about the characters’ fate.
The Night Agent is based on the novel of the same name by Matthew Quirk, in which Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso), a low-level FBI agent, turns his life upside down when he picks up the phone in the basement of the White House. On the other end of the line is Rose Larkin (Luciane Buchanan), who reports on a paranoid conspiracy that has something to do with the president. Peter and Rose try to find out the truth together, while several killers are chasing them.
The series was a big hit on Netflix and got a second season order after just four days. The story, however, did not spare the characters: there were several surprising deaths in the first season. The series creator and showrunner, Shawn Ryan, revealed to TVLine that they argued a lot about who to kill and in what order.
Ryan said that originally they planned to decide differently who would die first between Ellen (Eve Harlow) and Dale (Phoenix Raei), the Russian assassins who worked as a couple. In the end, they decided to kill Dale first, because it resulted in a better story for Peter and Rose. Ryan also admitted that many people did not want to see Erik (D.B. Woodside), Peter’s boss at the FBI, die, who lost his life in episode 8. The showrunner also revealed that Diane Farr’s character, who got shot in the last episode, originally would not have survived.
Ryan said that the secret of the series’ success lies in being different from other political thrillers. He said that they focused not only on Peter’s mission and paranoia, but also on Rose, with whom he developed a romantic relationship. He also highlighted that they chose the actors very well, who did not have big names, but that was not a disadvantage.
The first season of The Night Agent is available in full on Netflix.
