The term E3 replacement is acceptable, as there will be no E3 this year (ReedPop, the new organizer, has failed to meet the expectations of the Entertainment Software Association, ESA, the organization behind the show…).

Sony’s 2023 games list is sparse at the moment. We don’t even know officially when Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will arrive, for example (but we’ve heard rumors that Insomniac Games is planning a September release). Still, apart from that, we can’t think of any games that Sony has announced for PlayStation 5 that might be released this year (which is better than what we wrote about Xbox the other day: Microsoft executives are unhappy…)

Jeff Grubb brought up during a GiantBomb broadcast that Sony will be holding the PlayStation Showcase before Summer Game Fest, as it won’t be a State of Play (which is often held for one game, most recently Final Fantasy XVI), but much more than that. It will allow Sony to outline how the second half of the PlayStation 5’s life will begin, as it will be three years old this fall.

From this conclusion, we can’t automatically say that Sony’s show will come in May. Still, if Sony takes to the stage two weeks earlier, it will fall into the last month of spring, as Summer Game Fest, Geoff Keighley’s other show (as he is also behind The Game Awards), will start on June 8. Since Sony likes to hold its broadcasts on Thursdays if it comes two weeks early, we can expect it on May 25, giving the company enough time to be in the spotlight before the big summer (or at least June) game rush.

Of course, we should add that it is not official yet, but Sony should indeed be talking about their plans soon because their current schedule eerily resembles Microsoft’s emptiness…
