Processors and graphics cards capable of higher performance can not only lead to higher power consumption (although it doesn’t apply to the processors in question!), but they will also need a more robust cooling solution. It’s no coincidence that a graphics card takes up two, or even the now common three, slots in your computer because, without them, the GPU would quickly overheat, slowing down its clock speed and reducing performance. (We have personal experience of it.) Those who tune their GPUs sometimes come up with crazy solutions (liquid nitrogen, huge copper blocks…).

According to Tom’s Hardware, several users complain that their processors overheat during mostly regular use, sometimes even on a brand-new motherboard. One Reddit user came home to find that their Ryzen 7 5800X3D processor was overheating while their machine was on idle, and it had its fans spinning. The heat was also swelling the top of the CPU board. It’s a successful processor, it can get hot enough, but it shouldn’t be deformed. Maybe it was the processor, the motherboard, or the BIOS; unfortunately, we can only guess…

The 5000X3D processors have the same architecture as the 7000X3D CPUs that caused problems on ASUS and MSI motherboards. A YouTube tuning wizard, der8auer, ran into this problem without leaving the BIOS, and since ASUS removes older BIOSes from some of their motherboards, it’s always worth updating that as well. It should be noted that 3D V-Cache processors are affected, so traditional Ryzen 7000 CPUs are not. Therefore, it may be a case of overheating the V-Cache chiplet on top of the CPU.

AMD has shown something rare with the Ryzen 7800X3D processor (it can easily take on the more expensive 7900/7950X3D pair), but it’s safe to say that not everyone will have a favorable opinion of “the reds” because of it…
