The Little Mermaid Won’t Be Disney’s Biggest Hit? Forecasts Predict a Low Opening for the Live-Action Remake

MOVIE NEWS – The live-action remake of The Little Mermaid by Disney does not promise to be very bright in the American cinemas. According to IGN.hu, based on the forecasts, the film could only bring in 30-40 million dollars in revenue on its opening weekend, which is far behind the results of the studio’s previous adaptations.

One possible factor that could hinder the film is that Halle Bailey was chosen for the role of Ariel, the main character, who is of African-American descent. This outraged many fans who think the character should have red hair and white skin, as in the original animated film. However, Disney stood by the actress and said that she was the best choice for the role.

Another reason why The Little Mermaid might not sweep the cinemas is the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. Although vaccination programs have allowed more and more people to return to movie theaters, many still shy away from taking part in film entertainment among large crowds. This is especially true for families and children, who make up The Little Mermaid’s main target group.

The live-action version of The Little Mermaid is directed by Rob Marshall, who previously directed musicals such as Chicago, Into the Woods and Mary Poppins Returns. The music for the film was composed by Alan Menken, who also wrote songs for the original animated film. The cast also includes Melissa McCarthy (Ursula), Javier Bardem (King Triton), Jonah Hauer-King (Prince Eric), Awkwafina (Scuttle), Jacob Tremblay (Flounder) and Daveed Diggs (Sebastian).

The Little Mermaid is expected to premiere on May 26, 2023 in the United States.
